Faroe Islands Guide
The Faroe Islands are wild, remote and ridiculously beautiful. Think tiny villages beneath huge mountains, waterfalls tumbling into the ocean, winding coastal roads and some of the most dramatic scenery in Europe.
I’ve put together my complete 4 day Faroe Islands itinerary, including the exact route we took, where we stayed, my favourite restaurants, hikes, fishing trip and all the little things I wish I’d known before visiting.

MY FAROE ISLAND ITINERARY 🇫🇴
DAY 1
TRÆLANÍPA, VÁGAR & THE PERFECT FIRST DINNER
Base: Tórshavn
Sørvágsvatn & Trælanípa
Start with the hike to the famous floating lake viewpoint and those enormous sea cliffs.
Find the Highland cows
Keep an eye out for the Highland cows around Vágar. They make a pretty perfect photo stop.
Gásadalur & Múlafossur
Drive to the tiny village of Gásadalur and visit one of the Faroe Islands’ most iconic waterfalls.
Drive to Tórshavn
Take the scenic coastal route back towards the capital.
Dinner at ROKS
Finish your first day with incredible seafood and modern Faroese cuisine.
Overnight: Tórshavn
DAY 2
FISHING, WAFFLES & COASTAL VILLAGE VIBES
Base: Tórshavn
Fishing in Vestmanna
Head out on a morning fishing trip and try your luck catching cod and haddock in the North Atlantic.
Keep your catch
Bring a freezer bag or cool bag so you can keep your fish fresh for later.
Tjørnuvík
Drive to this tiny village tucked between the mountains and wander down to the black sand beach.
Waffles at Café Sólja
Stop for Faroese waffles or pancakes with one of the best café views of the trip.
Cook your catch
Take your freshly caught fish back to Tórshavn and cook it for dinner.
Overnight: Tórshavn
DAY 3
GRASS ROOFS, TIDAL LAGOONS & A NATURAL HARBOUR
Base: Gjógv
Saksun
Explore the tiny grass roof village, church and ridiculously beautiful mountain backdrop.
Tidal lagoon & canyon
Walk down towards the black sand lagoon and through the dramatic tidal canyon.
Scenic drive to Gjógv
Make your way across the islands, stopping whenever the views get too good to drive past.
Explore Gjógv
Wander through the colourful village and down to its famous natural sea gorge.
Coffee & cake
Slow things down with coffee and cake overlooking the surrounding mountains.
Overnight: Gjógv
DAY 4
WATERFALLS, KALSOY ADVENTURE & FISH AND CHIPS
Base: Gjógv
Fossá Waterfall
Start with a quick stop at one of the Faroe Islands’ most beautiful waterfalls.
Ferry to Kalsoy
Drive to Klaksvík and take the scenic ferry across to Kalsoy.
Kallur Lighthouse
Hike up to the lighthouse for some of the most dramatic cliff views of the entire trip and see the James Bond memorial.
Explore Kalsoy
Drive through tiny villages, wild valleys and the island’s famous single lane tunnels.
Ferry back to Klaksvík
Head back across to the main islands.
Fish and chips
Grab Nóa Fish & Chips by the ferry. Perfect after the hike.
Fríða Kaffihús
Finish with coffee and cake in Klaksvík before heading back.

🚗 Getting Around
Hiring a car is by far the easiest way to explore. The roads are excellent, although you’ll encounter toll tunnels, narrow roads and the occasional single lane tunnel as you venture further out.
For ferries, try to pre book where possible. It isn’t always strictly necessary, but if a ferry is full you could be waiting a few hours for the next one, which can throw off your entire day.
💳 Money & Paying
Cards are accepted almost everywhere, so we barely needed cash. The Faroese króna has the same value as the Danish krone, and Danish notes can also be used on the islands.
🥾 Hiking Fees
Something I didn’t realise before visiting is that some of the most famous hikes cross privately owned land and charge an entrance fee. Trælanípa and Sørvágsvatn is one example, so factor hiking fees into your budget and check current access before you go.
🍽️ Food & Restaurants
Tórshavn has plenty of great restaurants, but choices become much more limited in the smaller villages. If there’s somewhere you really want to eat, book ahead, particularly for dinner. I’d also keep snacks and water in the car on longer road trip days.
🏡 Choose a Couple of Bases
You don’t need to change hotels every night. We split our trip between Tórshavn and Gjógv, which gave us the best of both worlds: restaurants and convenience in the capital, followed by a much quieter village experience further north.
🌦️ Be Flexible With the Weather
The weather changes incredibly quickly, so pack layers and proper waterproofs and don’t plan every day down to the minute. A viewpoint hidden in fog can be completely clear a few hours later, so having some flexibility can make a huge difference.
📱 Check Your Roaming

♡ My Biggest Tip
Don’t try to see absolutely everything. The distances aren’t huge, but you’ll constantly want to stop for unexpected waterfalls, villages and viewpoints. Leave some room in your itinerary for the places you didn’t plan for.
